Sopapillas

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups flour
  • 2 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 TBLS Shortening
  • 2/3 Cup Warm Water
  • Oil or Shortening for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Using a pastry cutter, cut shortening into the flour until it resembles course meal.
  3. Gradually ad in the warm water.
  4. Mix until dough forms.
  5. Use your hands to kneed the dough for 1 minute.
  6. Cover and set aside for about 45 minutes.
  7. Separate dough into 2 pieces.
  8. Roll out on a lightly floured surface until about 1/8 in thick.
  9. Cut into 3-4 inch squares.
  10. Make sure they have flour on them before you place in the oil.
  11. Fry in hot oil until golden brown.
  12. If the oil is hot enough, they should puff up with in a few seconds.
  13. Place on a paper towel covered plae
  14. Toss in Cinnamon sugar.
  15. Serve with honey.
